::... DERMATOLOGY - CORNS AND CALLUSES

  ::...What are corns and calluses?

Excessive pressure or friction causes thickening of skin and the same when becomes painful is called as corns or calluses.
Corns:
A corn is small area of very thick skin. It is round in shape and very painful. Corns occur on toes or in between the toes, generally due to wearing misfit shoes.
Calluses:
A callus is thickened area of skin commonly observed over the bony area just underneath the toes. They may be painless but can become painful. Corns and calluses are more likely to develop in people who have very prominent bony toes, thin skin, or deformities of the toes or feet which cause the skin to rub more easily inside shoes.

  ::...What is the treatment ?

Doctor will advise ointment/solution of skin thinning agets like salicylic acid. Use of a pumice stone or emery paper is advised once a week. A moisturizer used regularly on a trimmed corn or callus will keep the skin softened and easier to rub down. Wear shoes that reduce pressure and rubbing on the toes and forefeet. Depending on the site of a corn or callus, a cushioning pad or shoe insole may be of benefit. If there is a foot or toe abnormality causing recurring problems, a surgery may be advised.
