::...What are corns and calluses?
Excessive pressure or friction causes thickening of skin and the
same when becomes painful is called as corns or calluses.
Corns:
A corn is small area of very thick skin. It is round in shape
and very painful. Corns occur on toes or in between the toes,
generally due to wearing misfit shoes.
Calluses:
A callus is thickened area of skin commonly observed over
the bony area just underneath the toes. They may be painless
but can become painful.
Corns and calluses are more likely to develop in people
who have very prominent bony toes, thin skin, or deformities
of the toes or feet which cause the skin to rub more easily
inside shoes.
::...What is the treatment ?
Doctor will advise ointment/solution of skin thinning
agets like salicylic acid.
Use of a pumice stone or emery paper is advised once a week.
A moisturizer used regularly on a trimmed corn or callus will
keep the skin softened and easier to rub down.
Wear shoes that reduce pressure and rubbing on the
toes and forefeet.
Depending on the site of a corn or callus, a cushioning pad or
shoe insole may be of benefit.
If there is a foot or toe abnormality causing recurring
problems, a surgery may be advised.
