Cracked heels are a common foot problem , more common
in ladies. Cracked heels are commonly caused due
to dry skin (xerosis). For most people this is a nuisance and
a cosmetic problem. The fissures or cracks can be deep and
painful to stand on. The skin can bleed and there may be an
infection.

Dry skin that predisposes them to cracks.
A thickened dry skin (callus) around the heel is more
likely to crack.
Wearing open or thin-soled shoes usually make the
symptoms worse.
Cracked heels are more common in winter season.

cracked heels?
Applying moisturizing cream twice daily.
A pumice stone can be used to reduce the thickness
of the hard skin.
Avoid open shoes or thin-soled shoes.
Do not use a razor blade or a pair of scissors.

- Regular maintenance is the best way to prevent the problem.
- Removing the hard thick skin by topical use of keratolytic drug like salicylic acid
- Applying appropriate moisturizer or emollient.
- Using socks and closed footwear.
- Insoles may be used to alter the way you walk to
prevent the thick skin from developing
- A heel cup may be used to keep the fat pad from
expanding sideways. This is worn in the shoe and
can prevent cracked heels.
